Pre-Licensing Insurance Education
New Rules effective July 1, 2009

As of July 1, 2009, Washington will become a Producer state and new pre-licensing insurance education rules go into effect in Washington State. The state insurance exam will change, as will the requirements for pre-licensing education. The pre-licensing education hours will increase to a mandatory 20 hours for each line of insurance (before July 1st, 2009 the required hours were 16 hours per line plus an additional 4 hours for the State Laws and Rules). The State Laws and Rules section will automatically be included in the 20-hour requirement. Along with the increase in the clock hour requirement, the study materials and state exams will change accordingly. Any study materials obtained before July 1, 2009 will not adequately prepare one for the state exams thereafter.
Our class hours have changed to 8am-5:30pm as of July 1st, 2009.
Your class completion certificates are valid for 12 months from the date they are issued. If you are within this time period, you will NOT be required to sit through class again. You will just need to purchased or obtain the updated material for the new state exams.
If you purchased self-study material or attended one of our live-lecture classes between the months of January-June 2009, please send us a detailed email with your full name and the exact date you purchased the material or attended class, and we will send you an addendum free-of-charge.
Before July 2009, the Commissioner's office was responsible for the oversight, approval and issuance of pre-licensing completion certificates for self-study students. As of July 1st, there is no longer a requirement to attend an insurance class at our location and any student will be able to self-study at home without requesting approval. Read about our Self-Study program here.
Slater Insurance School ALWAYS recommends attending a live-lecture class for your insurance exam preparation training. It can be very difficult to pass the state insurance exams if you have not been in class to hear our experienced instructors explain ambiguous and complicated topics in detail and answer student questions. Within 90 days of purchasing our self-study material, if you would like attend our live-lecture class, a full credit for the amount you paid for our self-study package will be applied to your live-lecture tuition. Attendance of class after 90 days of your original self-study purchase date will require full tuition and no credit will be transferred.
Before July 2009, if a producer had a non-resident license or had a reciprocal license in another state for at least two years, and in good-standing within the past 90 days, he/she could transfer the license over but usually needed to take a Washington State Laws and Rules class and pass the Laws and Rules state exam.

As of July 1st, 2009, the process has been simplified to just a bit of paperwork and accompanying fees. Please click here to visit the Washington Insurance Commissioner's Web site for more information.

There have been no changes to the requirements for license renewal.
Continuing education for all producers will continue to be 24 credit hours, including 3 ethics credit hours every two years. Click here for more information on Continuing Education for renewing an existing producer license.
